At work in my workshop

About Me

My photo
I was brought up on a smallholding by my Artist parents where my affinity for the natural world was nurtured. My first job, after finding school was not for me, was in forestry on Gorhambury Estate near St Albans where my relationship with trees and wood was developed. I have now been carving for over twenty years and exhibit my work regularly during Oxford and Bucks Art Weeks and Open Studio events. I joined Bicester Sculpture Group about ten years ago to increase the range of materials I used and to learn casting techniques. I am currently tutor technician for the group passing on my skills in welding and casting. TEACHING As well as working at the Bicester Sculpture Group I teach Woodcarving for all abilities at the Queens Park Arts Centre in Aylesbury. The times and details of the classes can be found at www.qpc.org . I also provide tuition for small groups, up to five , at my own workshop.

Some Commissioned Work

In the last few months I have been commissioned to do three very different pieces of work.

Pictured here is a Plaque in oak that is a representation of the Gilpin Family Shield that features on the Church in Horton cum Studley, shown below.

From the oak original I cast a copy in cement for the front of a Georgian House in Walton Street Aylesbury.

For the same house I then restored the columns on the front porch.
                                                                                    Before

I produced patterns in lime wood for  egg and dart mouldings and the ionic scrolled capitals, which I then cast in cement from rubber moulds.

                                                                                        After

Another unlikely commission was for a wood mock up of an electric heater for a local company prior to production in China.

The third was a Swan to top a music stand made by furniture maker and wood turner Steve Cooper.
The Swan is part of the shield of the Worshipful Company of Musicians who commissioned the piece.

A Recent Departure into Bronze.

The Little Owl I carved in Walnut ( on the left ) and mounted on an old fence post.

This is the bronze version .
Cast by Nick Davis in Cublington.
